The notification is a single, narrow overtime-hours instrument under section 27 of the OSH Code, applying throughout the Union Territory.
- The Lieutenant-Governor notifies the total number of hours of overtime applicable in an establishment or class of establishment throughout the Union Territory of Puducherry, in exercise of section 27 of the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 read with S.O. No. 272(E) dated 16 January 2023 of the Ministry of Home Affairs (opening clause).

Overtime wages, computation and the quarterly limit

The notification fixes the overtime wage rate and payment timing, the rounding of overtime, the daily-wage basis, the works in which spread-over may exceed twelve hours, and the quarterly cap.
- A worker who works more than eight hours in a day or more than forty-eight hours in a week, subject to the worker's consent, is entitled for that overtime work to wages at twice the ordinary rate of wages, paid at the end of each wage period (condition 1).
- In calculating overtime on any day, a fraction of an hour between fifteen and thirty minutes is counted as thirty minutes, and more than thirty minutes is rounded and counted as an hour on actual basis (condition 2).
- For a worker paid by the month, the daily wages are one twenty-sixth of the monthly wages, and for any other worker the daily wages or earnings as the case may be (condition 3).
- The spread-over of a worker may exceed twelve hours in any one day only in the listed works and circumstances in factories and building and other construction, such as urgent repairs, preparatory or complementary work, necessarily intermittent work, work that must for technical reasons be continuous, making articles of prime necessity, seasonal processes, work dependent on natural forces, engine rooms and boiler houses, breakdown of machinery, loading or unloading, exceptional press of work, and work notified as of national importance (condition 4, clauses (a) to (l)).
- No worker is to be allowed to work overtime exceeding one hundred and forty four hours in any quarter of a year (proviso).
